Co winki dink

Animator Hans Bacher entry over Easter weekend.  I would have liked to have been aware of this during last weekends trip to Amboise.

as I mentioned in some earlier post, the idea at disney was to have the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST story take place in the french LOIRE-area. there were some earlier locations like the black forest in southern germany and the neighbouring french alsace, but – maybe because of the french author CHARLES PERRAULT – everybody seemed to be happy with the loire area with its beautiful castles.

I also have a few pictures.

All the Cats Join in

Here’s a great segment from Disney’s 1946 “Make Mine Music”: All the Cats Join in.  It’s fabulous.

The background is very minimal.  It’s drawn in place as the characters need it.  This piece is very much about how the characters convey the excitement of the music, some hot Benny Goodman jazz.  The enthusiasm of these kids is positively contagious, as they rear back and fling themselves from point A and go skidding and scrambling while overshooting point b every time.  And great non-rotoscoped dancing.  I dig it.

BD Boum

One of the more endearing things I find about France is that comic books are broadly accepted as a form of art.

This weekend in Blois there is the 25th annual BD Boum, with all sorts of things happening all around town.

I don’t think there will be a lot of cosplay going on, though.

I noticed an older post on Bangazee, a blog about kids’ animation authored by Gred MCleod of the most awesome Brothers MCleod:

Yesterday I went on a Masterclass with Frank Gladstone at Aardman. He’s worked for Disney and Dreamworks and the like and one of the things he showed us was this cartoon, which is beautifully drawn, structured and has the most excellent timing. The dog’s name is also fantastic… Mark Anthony. Who calls their dog Mark Anthony? Brilliant!

I think this has always been one of my favorites since early childhood, but besides that it’s a great cartoon in almost every way.
