untergang

Sarah and I went to see Jim’s new film “Java and Fags”, which was pretty good–although several people walked out. I guess they needed to smoke…

But beforehand we saw the trailer to Der Untergang (which you can also watch online). It is a film about the final days of WWII in Berlin.
Even weeks before the film comes out, some critics (some of whom from overseas papers) are posing the issue of whether this film isn’t a tad too Hizzle friendly. I’m not one to judge. I just saw the trailer, and all I can say is it was some heavy shit, man.

The action takes place in Berlin ’45, the birthplace and time of my dad. According to legend, he used to suffer from recurring nightmares of loud explosions until his older sister told him as a young man that he was born during a bombing raid. After that the nightmares ceased.

We Americans and Germans alike owe our late legacy of the past fifty years very much so to the events of the first five decades of the last century. The greatest difference is that Germans know this all too painfully well, whereas Americans by and large do not.
