When Dude Dude Chick played the party last weekend, I recited the quote below in between verses of CCR’s Fortunate Son. Some people asked me who originally said this:
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and
groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more
desolation. War is hell.
-William Tecumseh Sherman
Ironic that such a compassionate statement should come from the most brutal of militarists in our own nation’s past. He was a Union General in our War between the States, who pretty much razed every thing in its path all the way to Savanna.
In other news, a year ago polls showed that while at times a majority of my fellow nationals were indeed in favor of our current second war, when you add conditions like high cost, high fatality or long engagement, you were really only left with at most 15 percent. Actually more like 13 or 12. Less than 15% percent were ever unconditionally in favor of this invasion.
Still, here is another account from the “other side”, and I don’t mean this side of the other side but the other side of the other side.
This article reflects an opinion that doesn’t surprise me, but still I have been awfully hungry to read in Western media for so long. If you read it, you’ll see there is symmetry where many assumed there was none.
