two scans
I mentioned today that I would put up a few scans of some interesting material which might prove helpful with the presentations. Voila. Here are two out of the six pages — I thought these were the most pertinent.
If someone would please print ’em out and let me know if the resolution is okay?
Also,
Everyone needs to print out and bring in a grading sheet. I uploaded a GIF and JPG version. Print out which ever one you like.

Jack the Ripper may have been a sailor who also committed similar murders in the Carribbean and Germany as well. Here.

I’m off to Poland this weekend with about a dozen friends, some of them Polish. We’re planning on traveling out there with group tickets, staying a coupla days in Brezlbnvzcyzbvyz, living in reasonably-priced dwellings and and eating sumptuously reasonably-priced feasts and meeting pricelessly good folks.
I’ll probably be back on Sunday and at any rate back in time to teach on Monday.
Incidentally, for those who remember Luke “Ancient” Mariner (I gave him that nickname), he’ll be visiting on the weekend following Cinco de Mayo. So there will probably be a little party at my place over that weekend. Stay posted.

Language Lab Time.
Okay. Here’s what we’re doing today.
Spot the Phish. (I missed two).
Listen to some people talking. Just about all of these mp3s are from NPR, and a lot of them stink. Try the interview with Linus Torvald up top. It’s pretty long — about 27 minutes — but Linus is fun to listen to. Of course, you’ll already know what he’s going to say — even I did — but he does a truly stellar job explaining complex stuff in a very lucid, simple way.
Take note of his accent. Does it sound more to you like British or American English? Also, take note of how he pronounces “Linux”.
There’s also another (quite humourous) listening opportunity at the bottom of this main entry.
THEN
Try one of these online tests.
Commonly Confused Words — I expect you should all score high on this one.
Google Speed Test. Some of these questions — you have to search for them in Google — are absolute killers.
The above two tests both come from a sorta creepy network/dating website that’s full of this kind of stuff. Mostly crap. So be warned.
ALSO:
Listen to a short radio documentary about the Smothers Brothers. Narrated by Steve Martin.
Listen to a song from the Smothers Brothers: The Impossible Dream.

It is a little known fact that the Klingons aided the Confederacy during the war and would've been victorious had the Romulans not interfered and given the Union their cloaking device. I was assigned to be cameraman and security detail.

I don’t know when exactly this video was made (at any rate after 9/11, when “everything changed”) but I found out about it just recently — dig it:
America We Stand as One is just one more tribute to that stuff that happened back then–and how, like the chick from Titanic–we got to get over it. Bless his heart. And it’s great that all the profits from the website are going to charity.
Oh , and after you watch that, be sure to check out America F-ck Yeah. It really rounds the whole thing out quite nicely. Quickly, now!
